Company History
Lion Hudson plc resulted from the merger in December 2003 of Lion Publishing plc and Angus Hudson Ltd. The merger created the largest independent publisher of books inspired by the Christian faith and its values in the UK. The company is owned by more than 800 individual and institutional investors.
Lion Publishing was founded in 1971 in order to publish books about Christianity for general and international marketplaces. Angus Hudson founded his imprint in 1977 to publish international co-editions for Christian communities around the world. In the 1990s his company acquired the Candle imprint of children’s books in the UK and then the Monarch range of books for adults.
Lion Hudson thus publishes books under four different imprints. Lion and Lion Children’s Books take Christian values into the general marketplace; Candle and Monarch support Christian families, individuals and communities in their devotional and spiritual lives. The company’s books sell all round the world, international co-editions being a particular strength. More than 60% of turnover is earned in export markets and titles have been translated into more than 170 different languages.
In recent years Lion and Angus Hudson books have won numerous prizes including the Smarties prize for children’s fiction (for Pauline Fisk’s Midnight Blue), the Angouleme International Graphic Book Festival award (for The Lion Graphic Bible), and 20 separate prizes at the annual UK Christian Booksellers Convention.
Aslan Trust
The Aslan Trust was established in the early 1980s. Its remit is to publish the Christian faith worldwide. The principal way in which it does this is to provide grants to local Christian publishers and writers in the developing world with a view to strengthening Christian publishing overseas. Grants have been made for capital infrastructure and training of writers, editors and others involved in publishing in many countries around the world.
The Trust also makes occasional grants to other imaginative schemes for advancing the Christian faith, both in the UK and abroad. In recent years beneficiaries have included youth projects, a Christian theatre company and books for child victims of crime.
The Trustees are the Directors of Lion Hudson plc. Further information is available from Paul Clifford, Managing Director, Lion Hudson plc, Wilkinson House, Jordan Hill Road, Oxford, OX2 8DR, England.

Prospective Authors and Illustrators
Submitting Manuscripts to Lion Hudson
Thank you for your interest in Lion Hudson. As you can imagine, we receive hundreds of manuscripts every year, and - like every publisher - we publish very few of them. The vast majority of the books we publish are commissioned by our editors, rather than submitted on spec. Please bear in mind that we have a specific publishing aim to publish books that reflect Christian values or are inspired by a Christian world view.
Before you go any further with your submission, please look through the Lion Hudson site. If the genre of book you have in mind does not appear on our site, then there is really no point in submitting it to us. Please note that we do not publish poetry and that only the Monarch imprint currently publishes any fiction.
How to make your submission:
Please note: only manuscript submissions to the Monarch imprint can be accepted online. For all other imprints, please follow the procedure below.
If you think your book proposal does fit in with genres we are publishing, then please write a synopsis, typed on one side of an A4 sheet, in one and a half line spacing with at least a one inch border on all sides.
Please specify for which imprint you are submitting: Candle, Lion Adult, Lion Children's Books or Monarch.
A covering letter should also be sent. Please specify if you have been published before, your background, and relevant qualifications and experience. Your full name, address and daytime telephone number must be included (and your email address if you have one).
If you would like an acknowledgement of receipt, please include a stamped self-addressed postcard with the title of your work on it. We will then post this back to you.
If the editor is interested in your synopsis, we will ask you for the full text - by e-mail or post - which will be non-returnable.
Important: Owing to the high number of unsolicited manuscripts received, we cannot reply to everyone who submits a proposal. If you do not hear from us within three months, you should assume that we are not interested in your proposal.
Freelance Illustrators
You can use email and the internet to show examples of your work to our design team. Email samples as 72 dpi colour jpegs or as pdf's or send your web site address to our art director. The subject line should state Design Department: Adult or Children's books as appropriate.
Alternatively, you can send colour photocopies of your work to our offices, clearly marked for the attention of the Design Department: Adult or Children's books as appropriate. Please do not send original artwork as we are unable to return samples. We very much appreciate artists’ submissions but due to the number we do not acknowledge receipt or comment on the suitability of the illustrations.
However you contact us be sure to include your postal address, daytime contact number and email address.

Environmental Policy
It is Lion Hudson’s policy to move to a situation where all our books are printed entirely on materials deriving from sustainable sources.
All our B-format black and white books are printed entirely on paper derived from independently-audited sustainable sources. The text (but not the covers) of all our C-format books is also printed on such paper. This represents about a third of our annual output of new titles.
We are now working with the printers of our colour books to move to a situation where these, too, are printed entirely on sustainable-forest paper.
