Eggs, Fish and Banana Leaves tells the story of Ruth Shakeshaft and her commitment to treating leprosy in Africa.
Ruth spent 30 years in Uganda where she was involved with the training of leprosy assistants as well as midwifery and other communal medical and social problems.
Many occasions were full of joy and laughter, music and dancing and others so tragic that she found it difficult to discern the hand of God.
During the latter part of Ruth's time in Africa, Uganda was ruled by General Amin, and Ruth experienced, first-hand, the difficulties and dangers of daily life under his dictatorship.
The author is a retired nurse. She now lives in the Wirral after spending 30 years in Uganda. She has also lectured on tropical medicine and was previously in charge of infection control in her local hospital.
